Michael Capon
Director of Music at Timothy Eaton Memorial Church since March 2006, Michael Capon recently relocated to Toronto from Fredericton, New Brunswick, with his wife Ellen. From 1997 to 2006 he served Organist and Choirmaster at Christ Church Cathedral, Fredericton, and was actively involved in the musical life of New Brunswick's capital city as a performer, conductor, composer, and teacher. Michael directed the Fredericton Choral Society, directed music for theatrical productions by the Fredericton Musical Theatre Company and Theatre New Brunswick's Musical Theatre School, taught music theory and organ students, and adjudicated for the Fredericton Music Festival. He also served as President of the Fredericton Chapter of the Royal Canadian College of Organists and the Fredericton Organists' Association.
Michael has composed choral anthems, liturgical music, organ music, and other instrumental music. Recent choral compositions include "My life flows on" for Soprano soloist, mixed choir, and keyboard, commissioned by the New Brunswick Choral Federation for their 2006 Spring Choral Fest, and "Come, Holy Ghost" for mixed choir and organ, premiered by the Fredericton Cathedral Choir on Pentecost Sunday 2005. Recent organ compositions include "Circle Dance", premiered by the composer in May 2005, and "Promenade: Homage to Gerald Bales", which appears in "Te Deum Laudamus", Volume 2, a collection of pieces in memory of Gerald Bales, recently published by the Royal Canadian College of Organists.
Michael won first prize in the Quebec-wide John Robb Organ Competition and Second Prize in the Royal Canadian College of Organists' National Organ Playing Competition, and has recorded for CBC Radio and Vision TV. He has also earned his Master of Music degree from McGill University in Organ Performance, and his A.R.C.T. (Royal Conservatory of Toronto) in Piano Performance.
Previous church positions include Assistant Organist at St. George's Anglican Cathedral in Perth, Australia; Director of Music at St. Matthias' Anglican Church in Westmount, Quebec; and Director of Music at St. Peter's Anglican Church in Brockville, Ontario.
