Camille Saint-Saëns was one of the great prodigies of music - an enormous talent but whose compositions are not well known today save for a few treasured works, including Le Carnaval des animaux, which he wrote in 1886 but did not allow to be published until after his death. Trained as a pianist and organist, Saint-Saëns became very influential in the French musical world. He performed, taught, founded a national music society, conducted, and authored several books on music as well as two books of poetry. His compositions include symphonies (including the famous “Organ Symphony”), concerti, chamber music, choral works and songs.
