Daniel Rubinoff - Saxophone

DANIEL RUBINOFF is acclaimed as one of Canada’s most promising young saxophonists. He has performed as a soloist and chamber musician in France, Canada and the United States. His discography includes The Old Castle, Daniel Rubinoff Plays the Music of Srul Glick, The Canada Song, The Dance of the Blessed Spirits, and Daniel Rubinoff Plays Denis Bédard. His recordings are broadcast on CBC, CJRT and CFMX Radio. He has appeared on the cover of the International Saxophone Journal with a feature article on his career. He won the ARCT Gold Medal from the Royal Conservatory of Music for the highest score in the orchestral instrument category.

While a resident at the Banff Centre for the Arts, he recorded a disc of saxophone chamber music, and recorded as a soloist for the New Jersey-based I Virtuosi label. Rubinoff’s composition, Tango, was chosen to appear on the Saxophone Journal’s Showcase CD.

Rubinoff performs on the soprano, alto and tenor saxophones, with a varied repertoire which includes classical, jazz, popular and world music styles. He offers numerous saxophone recitals with some of Canada’s finest musicians: Sax ‘ n Ivory, with internationally renowned concert pianist Gloria Saarinen; The Dance of the Blessed Spirits with organist Christopher Dawes with whom he also recorded Daniel Rubinoff Plays Denis Bedard for the Saxophone Journal; Classical Meets Jazz with pianist David Braid; SaxAccord with accordionist Joe Macerollo; and Music Old And New with harpsichordist Paul Jenkins. Rubinoff has performed recitals for the World Saxophone Congress (Québec), Octagon Recital Series (Nova Scotia), BC Touring Council (British Columbia), and Colours of Music (Ontario). He also appeared as a special guest on TV Ontario’s Studio 2.

Rubinoff instructs both saxophone and chamber music and gives masterclasses throughout Canada. He is a former Adjunct Professor of Saxophone and Chamber Music at York University and a former Affiliate Instructor of Winds at the Royal Conservatory of Music in Toronto. He is a frequent woodwind, symphonic band and choir adjudicator at music festivals, and he adjudicates wind examinations for the Faculty of Music, University of Toronto. He has appeared as a guest artist and teacher at many institutions including Queen’s University, Canadian Amateur Musicians’ Association (CAMMAC), Kincardine Festival, Arts York, and the Long & McQuade woodwind clinic programs.

Rubinoff first collaborated with Christopher Dawes on the 2002 CD release The Dance of the Blessed Spirits on the Carnival label - a ground-breaking collection of original repertoire and transcriptions for their unusual instrumental combination.
