"NOTES ON ST. PAUL'S ORGAN" By Eric Robertson

BEHIND THE ROWS of grey metal organ pipes standing to the left, right, and rear of the sanctuary lies an enormous treasure chest of sound. During the last 80-odd years much has been said about the vast dimensions of the instrument, while most of the information has been true, the most important fact remains that St. Paul's possesses an incomparable musical instrument .It is actually made up of thousands of small instruments in the form of pipes. For every note that is heard in the sanctuary a pipe is made to sound by wind passing through it. Behind the rows of facade pipes are a further 7500 or so pipes made of wood or metal with lengths from a few inches to the largest measuring thirty-two feet. The entire mechanism is strung together with some sixty-five miles of electrical cable and winded by trunks from the three massive blowers situated in the crypt. The quality of the sound from an organ is an equal combination of the instrument and the building in which it is housed.
